POWERLINK is a standard protocol for Fast Ethernet equipped with hard real-time
characteristics. Systems with redundant cabling can be implemented easily using
POWERLINK. Unlike ring redundancy, cable redundancy does not require cable
looping, which can sometimes be problematic. This allows the creation of all types
of tree structures. When using a device with the link selector function, data is always
transferred via the highest quality network lines. The link selector function is integrated
in the bus controller.
POWERLINK bus controllers X20BC8083 and X20BC8084 (starting with revision D0) and standalone hub
X20HB8880 are equipped with a modular hub extension. 1 or 2 additional slots are available depending on
the bus base. The X20HB1881 hub expansion module can be operated in these slots. It is important to note
that the hardware revision of the X20BC8083 and X20HB8880 must be ≥F0.
The hub expansion module is a 1x hub. The Ethernet connection is made using 62.5/125 μm or 50/125 µm
fiber optic multimode cable with a duplex LC connection. The module and network status is indicated using
LEDs.

These modules are even suitable for use in adverse atmospheric conditions.
The coating on the electronics module protects the components and circuit
board from the effects of condensation and corrosive gases. The effectiveness
of protection against condensation is checked using the test specified in BMW
GS 95011-4. and protection against corrosive gases using the 4-part corrosive
gas tests specified in EN 60068-2-60. test method 4. The tests are completed
both in the company testing lab, which is accredited in accordance with EN
ISO/IEC 17025:2007. and at certified external testing facilities.
There, the products undergo further testing to check their durability – even
beyond standard requirements.
The X20 Compact-S series of controllers is available in different versions.
In this way, the customer gets the product that best meets the requirements
of the machine both technically and economically.
The controller offers a wide range of communication options via POWERLINK,
Ethernet, USB and RS232. Optional RS485 or CAN interfaces are also available.
If an application requires additional interfaces,
the controller can be modularly expanded with 1 or 2 X20 interface slots.
This allows the use of the entire X20 fieldbus interface product range.
