Firmware

To use 1715 modules in a ControlLogix SIL 2 system, you must use firmware that

has been designed for SIL 2 use.

Duplex Configurations

For duplex configurations, a SIL 2 fault-tolerant architecture has dual-input, dual

adapter, and dual output modules. The input and output modules operate in

1oo2D (1 out of 2) under no fault conditions and degrade to 1oo1D (1 out of 1)

upon detection of the first fault in either module. The modules fail-safe if faults

occur on both modules. The adapters operate in 1oo2D under no-fault

conditions and degrade to 1oo1D upon detection of the first fault. A duplex

system could therefore be 1oo2D reverting to 1oo1D on the first detected fault

and reverting to fail-safe when both modules have a fault. Fail-safe is defined as

the ‘de-energized’ or ‘off ’ state. A Simplex Input or Output module is SIL 2

capable. Configuring them in a Duplex configuration adds availability but doesn't

add to the safety capability

Features and Benefits

1715 redundant I/O is Rockwell Automation’s first true redundant I/O platform and off ersexceptional ease-of-use. 

It requires no user programming code or additional hardware to operate.

With support for both standard and extreme environments, 1715 I/O off ersconsiderable flexibility,

supporting multiple confi gurations and applications with a single product.

It off ersbroad support for critical applications ranging from nonsafety and both simplex and duplexconfi gurations.

The 1715 platform also includes redundant Ethernet adapters for even greater fault-tolerant capabilities and includes premier

diagnostic capabilities.

Restrictions

• Volts per Hertz operation requires the use of the Custom User Defined Controller Communication Format.

If another Controller Communication Format is selected (e.g. Velocity Control, 

Position Control or User Defined Control) and the drive is configured for Volts per Hertz operation, 

the Drive Module will not connect to the controller.

• This module sometimes experiences PMI Comm faults during power cycles.

For example, when the Drive Module and PMI processor are power-cycled the drive module initializes its interface

with the PMI processor. During the transition from initialization to synchronized communication,

the Drive Module sometimes experiences communication faults and warnings. 

Analog Motion Modules

The ControlLogix family of analog servo modules is a cost effective option for

closed-loop or open-loop motion control of devices that support an analog

motion interface. The analog servo modules provide a ±10V analog

output-command reference and support a variety of position feedback devices.

As many as two axes can be controlled per module, and multiple modules can

be used to provide as many as 32 axes of control per ControlLogix controller.

SERCOS Interface Modules

The SERCOS interface modules use a single, digital fiber-optic link, which

eliminates as many as 18 digital wires per axis. Detailed drive-status

information can be sent from drive to controller and from controller to drive.

The SERCOS interface modules can connect to these servo drives:

• 2093 Kinetix 2000 multi-axis servo drive

• 2094 Kinetix 6000 multi-axis servo drive

• 2099 Kinetix 7000 high-power servo drive

• 2098 Ultra3000 SERCOS servo drive
