Collaborative process automation
The evolution of the traditional distributed control system (DCS) into today’s
more capable and all-encompassing process automation architectures has
been chronicled by analysts at the ARC Advisory Group as the advent of
the collaborative process automation system, or CPAS. In simplest terms,
‘collaboration’ implies the need for systems to share information in order
to perform optimal control actions and for people to make sound business
decisions. For this to become reality, a culture change needs to occur,
including using an environment that allows field devices, various automa
tion systems, and applications to share information without barriers. CPAS
is that environment.

The SD Series I/O product family includes DIN Rail horizontally or vertically mounted digital
and analog modules, as well as integration with intelligent field devices and protocols using
PROFIBUS DP, HART, IEC 61850. IEC 60870-5 104. DNP 3.0. and Modbus TCP communications.
Hardwire I/O and fieldbus I/O coexist and use the same function block library to build real-time
control applications.
Traditional SD Series analog input modules interface with field inputs such as pressure and
flow transmitter signals, thermocouple inputs, and resistive temperature device (RTD) inputs.
Analog output modules provide output signals to adjust final control elements such as control
valves, positioners, actuators, etc.
