The input signal voting mechanism operates through Software Implemented Fault Tolerance (SIFT) in software. When three signals undergo voting, the failure of any one signal is concealed by the remaining two functional signals. This occurs because the voting process selects the median of the three analog inputs or the two agreeing signals in the case of discrete inputs. The fault masking in a TMR system is so effective that specialized fault detection functionalities are embedded within the voting software. Prior to voting, all input values are cross-compared to identify significant differences, triggering a diagnostic alarm if detected.
