Largest framework agreement in Hitachi Energy's history enables long-term capacity expansion and accelerates energy transition.
Complementary technologies and expertise support TenneT's offshore wind capacity expansion in the German and Dutch waters of the North Sea.
Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader driving a sustainable energy future for all, and Petrofac, a leading international service provider to the energy industry.
has been selected by TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission system operator, to supply multiple offshore and onshore HVDC converter stations and related infrastructure, in order
to accelerate the integration of high-capacity renewable energy into the European grid.
Hitachi Energy and Petrofac were awarded a multi-year framework agreement as part of TenneT's ambitious “2GW Program” for offshore wind.
based on Hitachi Energy's pioneering High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology.
The agreement includes an initial commitment to deploy six record-breaking integrated renewable energy systems, five of which will connect offshore wind farms to the Dutch grid, and a sixth to the German grid.
The sixth connects to the German grid. Each of the connected systems will have a capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW) and a voltage rating of 525 kilovolts (kV), a world first for offshore wind.
This landmark framework agreement is Hitachi Energy's largest ever.
It confirms the opportunity for innovation in how state-of-the-art technology can be effectively deployed and how new business models can achieve the scale required for a green energy transition.
The framework agreement approach allows Hitachi Energy and Petrofac to plan ahead and add to their workforce and manufacturing capacity in a timely manner, and to train personnel with the skills required by the industry.
It also allows for synergies between subsequent projects to meet in-service dates.
Hitachi Energy will supply its HVDC photovoltaic converter stations, which convert AC to DC offshore and DC to AC onshore.
Petrofac will undertake the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the offshore platform and onshore converter station elements.
The first contract under the framework, the Ijmuiden Ver Alpha project, has been awarded with immediate effect. The second, Nederwiek 1. is
It is expected to be awarded later this year. The framework also includes the Doordewind 1. Doordewind 2. Nederwiek 3 and LanWin5 projects, which are
are expected to be awarded in the 2024-2026 timeframe.
“This innovative business model will lay the foundation for the integration of a large amount of offshore wind and bring visibility into the future.
In fact, we are already hiring to expand our global delivery capabilities and to efficiently fulfill these and other orders,” said
“ said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Grid Integration business. “We are proud to be a part of this journey
and, together with our partner Petrofac, set the benchmark for large-scale and rapid deployment of offshore HVDC transmission technology.”
“Today's announcement represents an exciting next step in the collaboration between Petrofac and Hitachi Energy.
We have secured the critical resources and yard capacity needed to accelerate the first two projects in the groundbreaking TenneT program.
“ said Sami Iskander, Petrofac Group CEO. “By combining Petrofac's industry-leading EPCI expertise with Hitachi Energy's proven technology
We look forward to supporting TenneT in connecting larger, more efficient wind farms to provide affordable, clean energy to millions of European households.
“TenneT has the know-how, scale and location to connect to North Sea wind energy. It is one of the most important infrastructure projects of this century; the
The green transformation of the energy system is key to decarbonizing industry,” said Tim Meyerjürgens, COO of TenneT.
“Together with our market partners, we are very proud to have achieved another important milestone.
Together, we have secured a decisive acceleration in the development of the offshore grid and set the course for the future European energy landscape.
