Companies to work together to deliver Nederwiek 1 and integrate offshore wind power into the Dutch grid at scale
Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader driving a sustainable energy future for all, and Petrofac, a leading service provider to the global energy industry, today announced the signing of a second project under a multi-year framework agreement worth more than US$1.4 billion with TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission system operator, to expand offshore wind capacity in the North Sea.
Together, the companies will deliver the Dutch transmission system Nederwiek 1. which is part of TenneT's landmark 2GW program consisting of several high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore grid-connected systems with 2 gigawatts (GW) of transmission capacity.
In a preliminary announcement earlier this year, Hitachi Energy and Petrofac reported the award of six project framework agreements. Under the landmark agreements, Hitachi Energy will provide its HVDC converter stations to convert offshore AC to DC and onshore DC to AC, while Petrofac will undertake the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the offshore platforms and onshore converter station elements. In addition to the framework agreement, the first project covered by the agreement, Ijmuiden Ver Alpha, was awarded.
Since the initial announcement, Hitachi Energy and Petrofac's teams have worked closely on preparations to reserve capacity based on a new business model approach for their HVDC technologies and platforms, and to initiate the detailed design process for Ijmuiden Ver Alpha.
Today's announcement reflects the strong momentum of the project, with early work on Nederwiek 1 expected to begin soon.
Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Grid Integration business, said, “As a pioneering technology and market leader, we are pleased to collaborate on the HVDC solution for Nederwiek 1. combining world-class energy and digital systems. “Our close collaboration with Petrofac, based on an agile business model, scalable solutions and synergies between projects, enables us to join forces to support TenneT's ambition to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind in the North Sea and provide more sustainable and reliable power to European citizens.”
“We have been working on our first project, Ijmuiden Ver Alpha, in collaboration with our partner Hitachi Energy and our customers. The award of Nederwiek 1 allows us to take the project to the next stage as we continue to focus on the standardization and harmonization of design and execution that will be at the heart of the 2GW program's 'design one, build Multiple' philosophy at the heart of the 2GW program,” said John Pearson, Chief Operating Officer of Petrofac's Energy Transition Program. “By aligning with TenneT's objectives, we aim to develop a blueprint for the rapid deployment of large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the 2GW program, that are critical to Europe's energy transition.”
Other projects in TenneT's 2GW program are expected to be awarded approximately every six months. These are grid connections landing in Geertruidenberg or Moerdijk (Nederwiek 3) and Eemshaven (Doordewind 1 and Doordewind 2). The sixth project is the German connection LanWin 5. which will be connected near Rastede, Germany.
TenneT's 2GW project
TenneT's 2GW project is a key step in Europe's transition to a low-carbon future. Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium have agreed to simultaneously install at least 2.030 GW of offshore wind energy by 65. Two thirds of this (40GW) will be covered by TenneT, with 20GW each in the German and Dutch North Sea.TenneT's innovative 2GW program is critical to achieving these goals and will provide a blueprint for the delivery of future offshore grid-connected systems.TenneT's strategy is focused on standardization and fostering new contractual models within the supply chain to create innovative and scalable solutions that can be deployed quickly and cost-effectively. of innovative and scalable solutions.
