Control cabinet applications in the North American market require specific testing and certification. In power supply applications, the design must comply with UL2237. Based on this standard, Binder has introduced the 823 and 824 series of compact cable connectors.
Binder, one of the leading suppliers of industrial circular connectors, introduces the 823 and 824 series cable connectors to the North American market. The K-coded and L-coded M12 products with screw wiring were especially developed for power supply applications and they meet the requirements of the industry-related protection class IP67. i.e. protection against dust and temporary immersion.
K- and L-coding in power supply applications
In industrial automation, the transmission of high currents via M12 connectors has become a fundamental requirement. 5-pole K-coded connectors are particularly suitable for alternating current (AC) transmission, e.g. for drives and frequency converters that require 630 V (AC) and 12 A. 5-pole L-coded connectors are suitable for direct current (DC) small drives, decentralized I/O modules, and a wide range of other direct current (DC) powered automation that are connected to a fieldbus system. DC)-powered automation components rated at 63V and 16A.
Background on UL 2237
The electromechanical interfaces of control cabinets used in the North American market need to be certified according to UL 2237 and UL 2238. which specifies cable assemblies and connectors for signal transmission, and UL 2237. which has additional requirements for power transmission, such as power supply for drives. It contains specifications for connector testing, safety components such as cables and cable sealing jackets, etc. A special feature of UL2237 is the so-called ground current test: Based on the cross-sectional area of the connecting cables, the ground protection (PE) has to withstand a current of 190 A (AAWG16) or 300 A (AWG14) for 4 seconds without interruption. For AC applications, an abnormal overload test must also be performed: 1.5 times the rated current. If the ground (PE) fuse does not blow, the test is considered passed.
823 and 824 Series Detailed Specifications
The Binder 823 and 824 series consists of pin and eyelet and angled connectors. These connectors have a rated voltage of 630V and a rated current of 12A (K code; 4+PE); and a rated voltage of 63V and a rated current of 16A (L code; 4+FE-functional earth). With M12 thread, outlet diameter 8-13mm, screw wiring. In order to comply with UL2237. PE contacts are connected in contact with the threaded ring, the certification is currently in preparation.
